Automation energy use: compare the right modes
Read Regulation 2023/826 together with amendment 2025/2262. Before comparing watts, define the product, configuration and actual operating mode.
Define the equipment being assessed
The scope covers the listed equipment categories that depend on mains power for their intended use and are designed for a nominal voltage of 250 V or below. Check exclusions and mode definitions for each equipment type.
Consolidated Regulation 2023/826 · scope and annexesAmendment 2025/2262 describes a motor-operated building element as including a motor or actuator and a control unit. Connected sensors powered from the same mains input point are part of the control unit. A PCB alone therefore does not automatically document the complete motor-operated equipment.
Regulation 2025/2262 · definitions and measurementThresholds: distinguish mode and date
The limits below apply only to equipment within scope and to the mode actually defined by the Regulation. They do not certify a product reference or an installation.
| Actual mode | 9 May 2025 to 8 May 2027 | From 9 May 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Off | 0,50 W | 0,30 W |
| Standby with reactivation function | 0,50 W | 0,50 W |
| Standby with information or status display | 0,80 W | 0,80 W |
| Networked standby, non-HiNA | 2,00 W | 2,00 W |
| Networked standby, HiNA or HiNA functionality | 8,00 W | 7,00 W |
A simple LED is not by itself an information or status display. A network connection does not establish HiNA classification: the functions and ports need supporting evidence.
European Commission · explanation of the modesCompare a documented measurement
- Identify the reference, version, power supply and accessories actually present.
- Describe retained functions, active networking, power-management delay and measurement conditions.
- Record active power in watts for that mode and configuration, then select the limit for the applicable date.
- Retain the source, page, method and scope of the conclusion.
An absent value means ‘to be confirmed’, not zero watts or ‘non-compliant’. VA, motor power and an electrical V/mA rating are not standby measurements. A value below the limit does not alone prove compliance with all functional and information requirements.
Power management and the time to return to a low-power mode need documentation, including the prescribed conditions and justifications. The assessment must retain the safety functions required for the automation’s intended use.

Read the comparison together with its evidence
The workbook separates scope, published value, configuration and documentary status. An item requiring confirmation or a component to assess within an assembly must not be presented as proven non-compliance.
