Automatic doors and gates · France and the European Union

In France, NF EN means the national adoption of a European standard, rather than a separate French regulation.

  • Key references: for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates, NF EN 13241+A2 (EN 13241:2003+A2:2016) covers performance; NF EN 12453+A1 (EN 12453:2017+A1:2021) addresses safety in use and test methods. For power-operated pedestrian doors, consult NF EN 16005+A1.
  • Conformity: legal requirements remain mandatory. For machinery, using harmonised standards is a voluntary route; presumption of conformity depends on the reference published in the EU Official Journal, its restrictions and the requirements covered. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces Directive 2006/42/EC on 20 January 2027.
  • Maintenance in France: the Order of 12 November 1990 requires two visits per year for automatic garage doors in residential buildings covered by that scheme. This frequency does not automatically apply to every gate. Each installation needs appropriate safeguards, tests and maintenance suited to its configuration and risks.

A source-based approach

European legislation explains the legal framework and harmonised standards. Manufacturer manuals document reference-specific functions and integration requirements. Conclusions remain tied to their source, version and date.
