Some ASO relays already require an external test. Selection must start from documented functions and the installation’s safety chain.
ASO 31-31 and 35-32 manuals establish the testing requirements for these relays. The European Commission explains the standards framework; it is not the source of this ASO-specific requirement.
Electrical monitoring of the sensing element, for example with 8.2 kΩ termination, addresses certain circuit faults. It does not by itself prove monitoring of every output and actuator.
External test by the controller
The controller triggers the test, checks the expected output state change and prevents hazardous movement if the test fails. An available but unused test input is insufficient.
Internal monitoring and redundancy
Other references describe internal diagnostics and independent or mutually monitoring switching elements. These functions do not remove commissioning tests or validation of the complete safety function.
What changes on 20 January 2027
The Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 generally applies from 20 January 2027. Article 52 provides transitional arrangements for products placed on the market under the Directive before that date and for certain certificates until their expiry.
As of 25 October 2026, the Commission reports that a new list of harmonised standards under the Regulation is being prepared. References published under the Directive must not be automatically transferred to the new framework.
Harmonised standards are a voluntary route to demonstrating compliance: the presumption covers only the requirements actually addressed, with the applicable edition and restrictions. Legal safety requirements remain mandatory.
The sources reviewed do not establish a new universal duty to self-test or replace every existing gate on that date. A substantial modification requires a separate assessment under the Regulation.
An ASO selection based on the manuals
ELMON relay 41-322 · internal monitoring and redundant output
Single-channel DIN-rail relay for an 8.2 kΩ tactile device, with redundant output and fault diagnostics. Validate its configuration and safety chain for the installation.
ELMON relay 32-242 · two monitored circuits, redundant relays
Two monitored 8.2 kΩ tactile circuits with mutually monitoring safety relays. 24 V AC/DC supply and DIN-rail mounting; outputs are restricted to extra-low voltage.
ELMON relay 32-312 · two monitored circuits in an enclosure
Dual-channel enclosed relay for two 8.2 kΩ tactile circuits. Its manual describes a redundant, mutually monitoring architecture; connection and final protection follow the installation requirements.
ELMON relay 41-312 · single-channel monitoring in an enclosure
For one 8.2 kΩ tactile device, with redundant output and fault diagnostics in a wall-mounted enclosure. Validate the reset functions and complete installation against the manual.
ELMON relay 42-622 · dual-channel monitoring and wide-range supply
Two monitored tactile circuits and redundant safety outputs, for an 85–265 V AC or 24 V AC/DC supply. The manual distinguishes the relay ratings from those of the system with sensors.
For the 42-622, the manual distinguishes the relay alone, stated as category 3 / PL e, from the described complete system with ASO sensors, stated as category 3 / PL d. The module PL must not be assigned to the entire installation.
The 39-726 is not included in this highlighted selection: its manual states PL d in §3, page 17, then PL e in the §13 table, page 25. Manufacturer clarification is needed; selecting only the higher value would be misleading.
In French workplaces, maintenance and regular inspections remain necessary. The Order of 21 December 1993 provides for visits at least every six months, adapted to use, and after a failure. Periodic inspection does not replace automatic testing of the control safety chain.
EN 12453:2017+A1:2021 and EN 12978:2024 are identified in the documentary research. Their full texts have not been analysed here: no new universal self-test clause is asserted on that basis.
